Parkinson's Benefit Pays Tribute To Martha 'Muffin' Johnson

Although Martha and the Muffins reached their commercial and critical peak in the early 1980s, the sounds of their groundbreaking single “Echo Beach” and albums Metro Music and This Is The Ice Age have become cornerstones of their hometown Toronto’s alternative pop scene.

That impact will be celebrated with a show on Oct. 8th at the Rivoli in Toronto, which will also serve to raise money and awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s Disease. Founding member Martha Johnson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2000, although she and longtime partner Mark Gane have carried on the band’s legacy since, releasing the album Delicate in 2010, as well as Johnson’s own Solo One in 2013.

The lengthy list of guests on the Oct. 8th bill displays how wide-reaching Martha and the Muffins’ influence has been, from contemporaries such as Lorraine Segato of The Parachute Club and Chris Tait of Chalk Circle, to younger folk rockers The Wilderness of Manitoba and experimental hip-hop crew Grand Analog.



Tickets to the show are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, with the proceeds being donated to Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals. More information is available at the Facebook page for A Tribute To The Music Of Martha And The Muffins.
