Casale succumbed Monday to "conditions that lead to heart failure," according to his brother and band mate Gerald Casale.

"As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning," Gerald wrote. "He was my levelheaded brother, solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got."

Devo was formed in 1972 after band members were inspired to make music from personally witnessing the Kent State massacre in 1970, according to Rolling Stone.

The band entered the American New Wave scene with their 1978 debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and found fame with the 1980 single "Whip It."

Casale is survived by his son Alex, his daughter, Samantha and his wife, Lisa.
