What Are Your Albums Worth

A new project collates the most precious vinyl records worldwide and shares the stories behind them

Whether you’re an avid collector who spends their free time tracking down rarities or just a casual music fan, chances are you own at least one vinyl record thanks to the vinyl revival. If you do, then you could be unwittingly sitting on a goldmine. The latest Lewis Capaldi 7-inch isn’t likely to be worth much more than a Boots meal deal (check back in a few decades), but if your collection pulls from some of the 20th century’s greats (and some more obscure releases), you might want to pay attention.

While a lot of the LPs listed seem common fare, there are specifics that make them worth the kind of money shown in the list - and chances are, there are only a few that exist which meet those specifics. Discogs - one of the main cataloguing sites could have hundreds of versions of an LP detailed that cover everything from label colour, matrix/runout variations, pressing plant specifics, and even misprints.

I have records from the '60s and '70s that while listed as being Canadian releases, actually have a US press number in the dead wax.

What makes a record valuable is the fact there are not a lot of them that meet the value parameters - and even if they do, finding a buyer is whole other story.

Online auctions can also severely affect the value of a record - and not always for the better.

Back in 2012 a customer brought me a bag full of ten original press Beatles records - nine of them still sealed. Sadly, they had not been stored properly and it was obvious that both covers and records were damaged (warped). But as an example, one - a UK import of Yellow Submarine had sold via a rather robust auction a few years earlier for the equivalent of $4500.00 Canadian. The buyer who jumped in to get it had actually driven up the price. A couple of weeks later, figuring there was a sellers market for this LP, he put it back up for auction - but they were on to his game. It sold with far fewer bids for only $1800.00

By 2012, the same record was worth only $150 on the open market.

Betamax - I totally agree.

There is also the factor that something may be worth X number of dollars - but that is true only if someone wants it badly enough. :-)
